Domain Investment Ideas

A common question people like to ask is, what are domain investors putting their money into these days? Well, the guys most of us read about are always buying and selling top-notch one word domains like Planets.com. Obviously, these types of domains rarely drop and even when they do, the odds of getting one for less than 4 or 5 figures is pretty much out of the question. That being said, people are always curious about what other types of domain names they CAN actually drop catch and store away for investment purposes. Believe it or not, there are some great opportunities out there and they don’t even involve the .COM extension!

Before you continue reading this you should be familiar with some of the common domain acronyms like ‘CVCV’ or ‘NNNN.’ If you’re not, have a quick look at this post and catch up on the common domain acronyms!

A year or two ago you could easily register almost any dropping NNNN.net for the cost of registration fee. Since then, the market for them has completely blown up! Four number domains always receive backorders and catching them for registration fee is practically impossible. This type of activity could signal future demand for LLLL.net domains as well. Once the four number domains are taken the four letter domains could very well be next to go. Important Note, that does NOT mean you go out and register every single available four leter .NET that you see! Instead, at this point in time you should only focus on four letter domains which have the least number of possible combinations, such as VCVC or CVCV. Since there are only a limited number of possible CVCV.net and VCVC.net combinations these types of domains will hold a higher value, especially once all LLLL.net domains have been registered! Along with that, you should only focus on the domains which contain at least three (if not, all four) premium letters. This gives your domain EVEN MORE value when all LLLL.net domains are taken. Why? Because there are even LESS possible four letter CVCV and VCVC.net combinations which contain three or four premium letters in them.

When you filter through the lists of dropping .NET domains you may see that there are about 200 LLLL.NET domains deleting in one day. However, out of those 200 only a few will have a possible VCVC or CVCV combination. Out of those few, you may be lucky if one or two contain all four premium letters. That alone tells me that people are either developing these types of domains, or they are holding on to them and not letting them drop!

Right now is the time to pickup those premium CVCV and VCVC.net domains. Once the demand kicks in and the numbers get slim you won’t be buying them for registration fee anymore! Have a look at some recent NNNN.net domain sales:
0870.net – $700 – April 5, 2014 – GoDaddy
4222.net – $547 – March 26, 2014 – 4.cn
4333.net – $627 – March 26, 2014 – 4.cn
6288.net – $643 – March 27, 2014 – 4.cn
1695.net – $200 – March 3, 2014 – GoDaddy

After some quick searching I found that there are only a few CVCV.net domains dropping over the next few days. Since the CVCV combination seams to be more popular and holds a slightly higher resale value than VCVC I would recommend sticking with those for now. Here are some that drop over the next few days.

May 15, 2014:
Xaja.net

May 16, 2014:
Vupi.net

May 17, 2014:
Xewe.net

If you already own a copy of DesktopCatcher you should consider searching and chasing these types of domains to add into your portfolio. Keep in mind, they don’t hold a huge value right now and that’s exactly why they’re an investment. Buy now while you can and be prepared to sit on them for two or three years. Remember, focus on CVCV combinations, premium and/or repeating letters (such as Xaja above has repeating A’s), and be prepared to park them. Once the market picks up you can make nice returns on a small portfolio of CVCV.net domains!
